From the FXWW Chatroom: Initial unemployment claims +22k to 259k in Jan 21 holiday
week vs 249k expected. Unadjusted claims -69,844 vs -94,204 seasonal
factors expected, payback from the larger-than-expected unadjusted drop
in the previous week. There no state claims estimated and no special
factors cited by Labor. The 4-week moving average -2,000 to 245,500 in
Jan 21 week, a fifth straight decline to the lowest level since the
Nov. 3, 1973 week, but the average would rise by 5,500 next week if the
headline number is unchanged. Continuing claims +41,000 to 2.100m in Jan
14 employment survey week, down 5,000 from the Dec survey week. Both
unadjusted initial claims and unadjusted continuing claims remain well
below their year-ago levels.
